The so-called saxifrage (Saxifraga) occurs in more than 450 subspecies, which often grow in a cushion-like manner and at a low height. Since the frugal plant often grows in nature in narrow rock crevices filled with only a little humus-rich substrate, people used to believe in the rock-splitting power of the saxifrage.
Which location does the saxifrage prefer?
The ideal location for saxifrage (Saxifraga) depends on the subspecies, but in general they prefer light partial shade or full sun. They thrive in rock gardens, dry stone walls and humus-rich soils. Waterlogging and acidic soils should be avoided.
Light requirement depends on the respective subspecies
There are species such as the popular moss saxifrage, which is often available in garden shops, which are particularly happy about a place in light partial shade and under the protective canopy of a larger tree. The succulent species of saxifrage in particular are also suitable for planting in full sun. In the spaces between rocky rock gardens and as hanging vegetation on dry stone walls, the saxifrage can be beautifully combined with the following plants:
- Storksbill
- Gentian
- Carnation
Avoid waterlogging as much as possible
As a rule, most varieties of saxifrage are winter-hardy, but there should be no persistent waterlogging at the planned location all year round. Heavy and clayey soils can be provided with better drainage by adding gravel (€7.00 on Amazon) and sand.
Tip
The saxifrage is not particularly sensitive to the substrate at the chosen location, although nutrient-rich and humus-rich soil has a positive effect on growth. Acidic soils should be prepared for saxifrage by adding lime.
