Can giant bamboo be grown in Germany?
Growing giant bamboo (Dendrocalamus giganteus) is easily possible in Germany because it is hardy down to -15 °C and adapts well to sunny locations with nutrient-rich, loose soil. Regular watering is crucial for growth.
The giant bamboo, also known as Dendrocalamus giganteus, has no problems with the climatic conditions in Germany. It is well hardy and can tolerate frost even over a longer period of time down to around -15 °C. However, he has no objection to winter protection in the first few years. A cover made of leaves, straw or brushwood is very good for the root ball.
Caring for the giant bamboo
Like all types of bamboo, the giant bamboo is quite easy to care for. It just needs a lot of light and water. It thrives particularly well in a sunny location. However, it must also be carefully supplied with water, even in winter. On frost-free days, a little water is very useful. However, curled leaves are a sign of lack of water. Then the Dendrocalamus giganteus must be watered immediately. If the leaves turn yellow, over-fertilization or excessive watering could be to blame.
