There are more than 100 varieties of Dipladenia, also known as Mandevilla. It was already very well known in the 19th century, but has since been forgotten. Many breeds have been more or less adapted to the European climate.

Which Dipladenia varieties are there?

Popular Dipladenia varieties are the Mandevilla laxa (Chilean jasmine) with white flowers, the Dipladenia “Sundaville Red” (R) as a hybrid with lush growth and bright red flowers or the Mandevilla “Diamantina Opale Yellow Citrine” with lemon-yellow flowers and orange center.

Very interesting, for example, are the different Dipladenia Sundaville species that a Japanese breeder developed from Mandevilla. The Dipladenia “Sundaville Red” (R) impresses with beautiful velvety red flowers and particularly lush growth.

Which Dipladenia is suitable for which location?

Basically, all Dipladenias should have a warm and bright place. Depending on their size and growth habit, some varieties are better or worse for planting in balcony boxes or hanging baskets.

It is best to plant small and bushy varieties in balcony boxes, optionally hanging or semi-hanging, such as plants from the Sundaville Classic series or “Diamantina Jade White”. Since the Dipladenias cannot tolerate waterlogging, place a drainage layer (€19.00 on Amazon) in the planters before planting.

You can also plant a tall and/or climbing Dipladenia in boxes that you place on the terrace or in the garden. Give the plant a climbing aid, for example a trellis or a special trellis. Please remember, however, that the Dipladenias are not hardy and should be moved to a suitable, bright winter quarters quite early on.
