Indoor cypresses are not just houseplants for the apartment. They like to spend the summer in a bright, not sunny location on the terrace or balcony. The care is not particularly complicated. What you should consider when caring for a room cypress.
How do I properly care for a room cypress?
Proper care for a room cypress includes sparing watering without waterlogging, occasional fertilization from April to October, no need to prune, repotting every two to three years and a bright winter quarters with 5-10 degrees Celsius. Attention: Indoor cypresses are poisonous.
How are indoor cypress trees watered?
Do not water indoor cypress trees too frequently. Before watering, wait until the surface of the substrate has dried out to a depth of approximately two centimeters.
Make sure that there is no waterlogging.
Is fertilizing the indoor cypress necessary?
Most plant substrates contain a lot of nutrients, so fertilizing a room cypress is usually not necessary.
Normal garden soil mixed with a little sand or cactus soil are suitable as a substrate. The soil should be loose and permeable to water.
If you want to fertilize, add some liquid fertilizer to the water every three to four weeks from April to October. Under no circumstances should you fertilize in winter.
Do the plants need to be cut?
Cutting is not necessary. If the plant gets too big or you want to grow it in certain shapes, you can always use scissors.
When will we repot?
You should plant indoor cypresses in larger pots and fresh planting substrate every two to three years.
What diseases and pests occur?
The indoor cypress is a fairly robust plant that doesn't get sick often. It is usually a care error when the plant suffers from root rot. Waterlogging is responsible for this.
Spider mites and aphids occasionally appear. These are combated with commercially available products or with a soft soap solution (€4.00 on Amazon).
The appearance of spider mites is more common in winter. Often it is due to high humidity.
Why does the indoor cypress turn brown?
If the plant is right next to the window, sunburn can cause brown spots. Other causes include too high or low humidity and fungal diseases.
Are indoor cypresses hardy?
Indoor cypresses are not hardy in our latitudes. The plants are overwintered indoors at 5 to 10 degrees. The winter quarters must be very bright.
Tip
Indoor cypresses are highly poisonous. In an apartment where there are children and pets, it is better to avoid caring for this plant.
