Normal garden soil or potting soil from the hardware store are not suitable for growing Venus flytraps. This soil is far too nutritious and not loose enough. Use special soil for carnivores as a substrate. You can also mix the plant substrate yourself.
Which earth needs a Venus flytrap?
For Venus flytraps you need special carnivore or orchid soil that is low in nutrients and contains no lime. Ideally, it should consist of two thirds peat and one third quartz sand, gravel, expanded clay or polystyrene balls.
Mix soil for the Venus flytrap
All organic materials that do not contain lime and remain nice and loose are suitable:
- Peat (white peat)
- peat moss (sphagnum)
- Quartz sand
- gravel
- expanded clay
The substrate should consist of two-thirds peat, to which other materials are added. To keep the soil nice and loose, you can also fold in Styrofoam balls.
You can get special carnivore soil at the hardware store. Alternatively, you can use orchid soil for your Venus flytrap. However, this should only be lightly fertilized.
Tip
The substrate for Venus flytraps should be as loose as possible. Since the peat decays over time, you must repot the plant regularly and place it in new carnivorous soil.
