The transparent plastic pot is not very suitable for presenting a noble orchid in a stylish manner. As the epitome of exoticism and luxury, the flower diva appears much more impressive in a glass vase. We will explain how to properly place an orchid in a glass using the example of a Phalaenopsis in two variations.

How to put an orchid in a glass vase?

To place an orchid in a glass vase, either use decorative elements such as Euphorbia spinosa, sphagnum and mother-of-pearl discs, or plant the orchid in orchid substrate and place expanded clay on the bottom of the vase for drainage.

Variant 1: With decorative elements

Since a glass vase reveals the network of aerial roots, decorative components are used in this technique, such as greenery from Euphorbia spinosa, sphagnum and mother-of-pearl discs. This is how it works:

  • Tank the orchid so that no pieces of substrate fall off
  • Wrap the root ball with Euphorbia spinosa and place it in the glass vase
  • Insert the mother-of-pearl discs between the greenery and the glass wall

Finally, use the moss to airily cover the surface of the substrate and hide it from view.

Variant 2: Skillfully used in orchid substrate

If you want to continue classic pot cultivation in a glass vase, choose this variant. The orchid is unpotted, the previous substrate is shaken off and dried aerial roots are cut off. Then fill a 2-3 cm high layer of expanded clay on the bottom of the vase as drainage. Proceed as follows:

  • Hold the Phalaenopsis at the desired height in the vase to estimate the filling level of the substrate
  • Put the orchid aside again to fill in pine bark substrate
  • Position the root ball on top and fill it with substrate up to the edge of the vase

While you are pouring in the coarse orchid substrate, tap the vase on the table every now and then so that the pieces of bark are distributed without any air holes.

Tips for care in the jar

To properly water a phalaenopsis in a glass, fill the container with soft, room temperature water. After a few minutes, pour out all of the water to prevent waterlogging (€11.00 on Amazon) and rot from forming. During flowering, add some liquid orchid fertilizer every second or third watering.

Tip

Easier than a phalaenopsis, arrange the Vanda orchid in a glass. Since this type of orchid thrives without soil, insert the previously sprayed aerial roots into the vase. For decoration you can optionally spread some glass beads on the floor. If necessary, a glass rod ensures the necessary stability of the Vanda orchid.
