How do you grow daffodils in a glass?

To grow daffodils in a glass, you need a glass jar, pebbles and daffodil bulbs. Fill the jar halfway with pebbles, place the onions on top and cover the bottom part of the onions with water. First place the glass in a cool place and then in a bright place.

Planting daffodils in a glass

First you should buy one or more daffodil bulbs. You will also need a glass jar and pebbles. It doesn't necessarily have to be a glass vessel. It can also be a ceramic vessel or other container. The main thing is that it is at least 15 cm high and sufficiently wide.

The glass is half filled with the pebbles. The onions are then placed on the pebbles. Depending on the size of the container, it can hold one to five onions. The onion tips should point upwards. Leave some space between each bulb to avoid mold.

It continues like this:

  • fill with water so that the lower part of the onions is in the water
  • place in a cool place (doesn't have to be bright)
  • After 2 weeks the white root threads become visible
  • then place in a bright place e.g. B. on the window sill
  • Flowering starts in 4 weeks

What care is necessary?

  • Change water regularly to prevent rot and algae formation
  • use low-lime water
  • cut down stems after flowering
  • if applicable Add some fertilizer to the water
  • After flowering, plant the bulb in the garden or leave it over the summer

Advantages compared to daffodils in a vase

Daffodil bulbs are available all year round and can always be planted in a glass. Daffodil cut flowers are usually only available in spring. Furthermore, daffodils last longer in the glass, smell more intensely and you can also use a container that would otherwise just gather dust in the cupboard

Tips & Tricks

Since daffodils are poisonous to pets, the jar containing the flowers should be placed in a place where pets cannot reach.
