The potting soil in which the poinsettia was planted when purchased is not always really suitable. Poinsettias like it slightly acidic and need a water-storing substrate. If you want to enjoy your poinsettia for longer, simply mix the soil yourself.

Which soil is suitable for poinsettias?

To mix suitable soil for poinsettias yourself, you need peat, garden soil, quartz sand and lava granules or alternatively orchid soil. The mixture consists of 50% peat, 25% garden soil, sand and lava granules for ideal water and nutrient storage.

Mix your own soil for the poinsettia

To mix soil for poinsettias yourself and repot the poinsettia, you need:

  • Peat
  • Garden soil, preferably with clay content
  • Quartz sand
  • lava granules
  • alternative orchid soil

Half of the soil should consist of peat mixed with a quarter of garden soil. Sand is mixed in to keep the soil loose. Lava granules ensure that the plant substrate can store enough water.

Tip

You should be sparing when fertilizing poinsettias. Too many nutrients cause the planting substrate to become oversaturated, causing the poinsettia to die. When giving liquid fertilizers (€8.00 on Amazon), only use half of the amount stated on the packaging.
