For an experienced gardener, propagating papyrus is certainly not a problem, but you as a beginner should also be able to master this challenge. The only requirement for this is that you have a he althy and strong papyrus plant.
How can I propagate papyrus?
To propagate papyrus, divide the root ball or take cuttings. When dividing, you cut the root ball into several parts and plant them. For offshoots, cut off 5 cm below the leaf tuft, place them in growing substrate and water them regularly.
How to propagate your papyrus by division
The root ball of a papyrus plant consists of so-called rhizomes. These root runners spread very well and quite quickly. Plants with rhizomes can easily cope with any injuries to the roots and can practically repair them themselves. So these plants, like the papyrus, can be divided very well.
It's best to use planting or transplanting in spring to divide your papyrus. Cut the root ball into two or more parts with a sharp knife, loosen the ball a little with your fingers and replant the individual parts. Don't forget to water the plants well.
How to Grow Papyrus from Cuttings
Growing offshoots is also quite easy with Papyrus. However, it takes longer to get attractive plants this way. Cut off a few stalks from a he althy, strong plant about 5 cm below the leaf crest. Plant these cuttings about 2 to 3 cm deep in a growing pot with a rather lean substrate. Water the cuttings and also spray them with low-lime water.
During growth, the offshoots need a warm, humid climate. If you don't have a mini greenhouse (€239.00 on Amazon) for your offshoots, then put a transparent plastic bag (e.g. a freezer bag) over the growing pot. Now you should spray the cuttings regularly with lukewarm, low-lime water or even with rainwater. Air your cuttings daily to prevent mold from forming.
Papyrus multiply soon:
- only propagate he althy, strong plants
- very easy: propagation by division
- simply divide the root ball and plant the parts again
- Cut offshoots about 5 cm below the leaf head
- be sure to avoid mold formation on offshoots
Tip
For quick propagation, we recommend dividing existing plants. Thanks to its rhizomes, the papyrus grows quite quickly and you will have beautiful plants after just a short time.
