Ivy plants are climbing and climbing plants for indoor cultivation whose shoots can be many meters long. If the plant is to climb in height, it needs a climbing aid. What types of climbing aids are there?
Which trellises are suitable for ivy plants?
Small trellises, epithet trunks with moss or nails on the wall are suitable as climbing aids for ivy plants. The tendrils must be tied manually or guided through the climbing aid, as ivy plants do not form adherent roots.
Ivy plants do not form adhesive roots
Unlike other climbing plants, ivy plants do not develop adhesive roots, only aerial roots. These do not adhere to the ground or a climbing aid and must therefore be tied to the climbing aid by hand or secured in some other way.
The right climbing aid for ivy plants
You can use anything that you can lead the tendrils along or tie to as a climbing aid for an ivy plant.
Small trellises that are inserted into the substrate are often used. The tendrils are simply passed through the mesh. For hydroponic ivy plants, the climbing aid should be made of plastic so that it does not rot.
If you use a trellis as a climbing aid, the pot must be sufficiently deep so that you can anchor it well in the ground.
Epith stems as climbing aid
Epithen stems wrapped in moss are very popular as climbing aids. The moss stores water and therefore increases the humidity.
The tendrils of an ivy are attached to the epithet trunk with clamps (€13.00 on Amazon).
The clamps must not constrict the shoots of the ivy. Otherwise they stop the supply of water and nutrients, so that the ivy plant has yellow leaves and, in the worst case, the shoot dies.
Pulling the ivy plant climbing
To add greenery to a wall, all you need is a few nails. Simply tie the tendrils of the ivy plant to it.
Tip
You can easily grow an ivy plant without a trellis if you simply let the tendrils hang. But remember that ivy plants are poisonous and the tendrils must not be within reach of children and pets.
