Aronia begins to produce fruit diligently from the second year onwards. Is the nutrient supply in the soil sufficient for this, or does it need additional fertilizer? If so, what, when and how much is optimal for a good harvest? We'll clarify.
How and when should you fertilize Aronia?
Aronia should be fertilized in spring with organic fertilizer such as mature compost, mature manure, horn shavings, horn meal or Bokashi pellets. In poor, sandy soils, regular fertilization may be necessary in order not to impair the growth of Aronia.
Does Aronia need to be fertilized regularly?
Thedepends on the soil Aronia does not have a high nutrient requirement, as one would expect. It can't do without nutrients either, after all it bears plenty of flowers and fruit. If the location has fertile mixed soil, it can do without fertilizer. If neighboring plants are fertilized, they will receive something anyway. In very poor, sandy soils, the nutrient supply will eventually be exhausted. This should therefore be fertilized regularly if the growth of Aronia is not to suffer.
Which fertilizer is optimal for aronia?
Since aronia doesn't need many nutrients at once, organic fertilizers are optimal. They decompose evenly over weeks and months. The Aronia is always well supplied and there is no over-fertilization. This is more to be feared with a mineral fertilizer from the market, as all of its ingredients are immediately available. The following are available asorganically safe fertilizer:
- ripe compost
- mature stable manure
- Horn shavings
- Horn meal
- Bokashi Pellets
When and how often should Aronia be fertilized?
If an organic fertilizer is used as recommended, one fertilization in spring is sufficient for the entire year. If, in exceptional cases, a commercially available mineral-safe fertilizer is used, the manufacturer's information on dosage, timing and frequency must be strictly observed.
What are the consequences of over- or under-supply?
An oversupply motivates the plant to grow very strongly - just to grow! TheAronia does not bloom or only sparsely. When there is a shortage of nutrients, nutrients are so scarce that more and more brown leaves can appear. Neither is a desirable situation.
When and with what should Aronia be fertilized in the pot?
Aronia in the pot mustduring the growing season be fertilized because it cannot sustain itself permanently from the small amount of soil in the pot alone. The fine horn meal and bokashi pellets, swollen and slightly crushed, are suitable for them. Two fertilizations per year, one in spring and one in early summer, should be sufficient. A mineral berry fertilizer is dosed sparingly and administered every four weeks.
Tip
Mulch Aronia and provide it with nutrients
Mulching is not absolutely necessary for Aronia because it also copes well with dry soils. It is still worth covering the root disc with an organic mulching material because the decomposition of the material constantly adds nutrients to the soil. Then further fertilization is no longer necessary.
