African sisal, bayonet plant, arched hemp Sansevieria, as the popular houseplant is botanically called, has many names. Some of them indicate their practical use in their African homeland: the fibers of some species are used for clothing or everyday products such as mats and ropes.
Is bow hemp poisonous to people and animals?
The bow hemp (Sansevieria) is poisonous to people, children and pets because all parts of the plant contain toxic saponins. If poisoning is suspected, symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, cramps and diarrhea can be observed.
All parts of bow hemp are poisonous
But especially if you have small children and/or pets at home, you should either ban the bow hemp from your home or move it to a completely inaccessible place. All parts of bow hemp contain toxic saponins that can break down the blood. Adults rarely eat their houseplants in salad, but small children and cats like to nibble on the tempting green - especially the latter if they don't have enough cat grass available. You should immediately become suspicious if you experience the following symptoms:
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Cramps
- Diarrhea
Now these symptoms are of course quite unspecific and in children there can be a whole range of illnesses behind them. However, in cats it is often poisoning. If you are sure in both cases that it is a sign of poisoning, call the poison control center immediately for children. Take your pet to the vet.
Useful bow hemp: Sansevieria as an indoor air improver
However, bow hemp not only has a dangerous side, but also an extremely practical one: the plant has been proven to improve indoor air and filter out toxins from the air we breathe - which is one of the reasons why houseplants should be in every apartment. Sansevierias are even suitable for people without a green thumb, as they are extremely easy to care for and rarely need to be watered.
Tip
If you suspect poisoning, give the person affected plenty of still (not carbonated!) water to drink; giving medicinal charcoal (€16.00 on Amazon) such as charcoal tablets is also ideal. These bind the poison and prevent it from passing into the blood. However, do not induce vomiting!
