In the competent cultivation of bromeliads, irrigation is of particular importance. A distinction is made between potted and tied plants. Read here how to properly water your tropical houseplant at any time of the year.
How should you water bromeliads correctly?
Water bromeliads correctly: Use only lime-free water (min. 15 °C) and pour it into the rosette funnel. Keep the substrate constantly slightly moist and replace the funnel water monthly. Bromeliads that have been tied up should be sprayed regularly.
Water bromeliads correctly in the pot – these 3 things to pay attention to
In indoor cultivation, bromeliads usually thrive potted in soil. Since the exotic flowering and foliage plants generally do not feed themselves via their roots, irrigation plays a key role in care. The focus is on the funnel that the leaf rosette forms, the substrate and the quality of the water. How to do it right:
- Use only lime-free water with at least 15 degrees Celsius
- Pour the water into the funnel
- At the same time, keep the substrate constantly slightly moist
How often you refill the water in the funnel and water the substrate depends on the season, the location, the type of bromeliad and the temperature. A generally valid statement cannot be made here. Regular substrate checks and the filling level in the cistern ensure that there is neither drought stress nor waterlogging.
Change the water in the funnel regularly
If excess water collects in the saucer, pour it out after 30 minutes at the latest to prevent waterlogging. The water in the rosette funnel should be replaced once a month.
Tip
Tied bromeliads are not watered via the funnel. In this case, spray the entire plant regularly with soft water at room temperature. How often a spray is required depends on the site conditions. The range extends from daily watering in summer to week-long intervals in winter.
