In good substrate and in the right location, anturias develop splendidly, continually produce deep green leaves and new flowers almost all year round. If the conditions are less than ideal or there are errors in care, the ornamental plant may suddenly get yellow and later brown leaves.

Why is my anthurium getting brown leaves?

Brown leaves on anthuriums can be caused by unfavorable lighting conditions, incorrect substrate, too much watering or over-fertilization. To solve the problem, you should adjust the location, switch to orchid soil, water less and reduce fertilizer.

Causes of brown spots can be:

  • Unfavorable lighting conditions
  • Substratum not tailored to the needs of the plant
  • Too much watered
  • Overfertilization

The right location

As an epiphyte, the flamingo flower needs a lot of light, but it does not like direct sunlight and reacts to it by yellowing or browning the foliage. Place the plant in a sunny window or shade the flamingo flower on sunny days.

Wrong substrate

Anturias do not form a widely branched root ball like many plants, but rather a main root shoot with small secondary roots, similar to those of orchids. The roots need a lot of light and air. However, they don't like compact potting soil at all and the flamingo flower gets brown leaves.

If this is the cause of the leaf discoloration, transfer the plant to orchid soil or mix the potting soil with loosening Styrofoam balls or expanded clay.

Too much watered

Anthuriums are very sensitive to waterlogging. If you water too much, root rot occurs quite often. Due to the damaged roots, the plant can hardly absorb any liquid, the leaves turn brown and dry out.

In this case, repot the plant as quickly as possible and remove the root parts affected by rot. Water much less in the future and only when the substrate feels dry after the thumb test.

Overfertilization

Like all plants, the flamingo flower needs nutrients, but at the same time it is quite frugal. If you fertilize too much, it will respond to this error in care with brown discoloration of the leaves. It is sufficient to supply the plant with half the dosage of a commercially available liquid fertilizer every 14 days.

Tip

Yellow or brown leaves look unsightly. Although the anturia does not normally need to be cut back, you should cut it off with a sharp knife.
