Have you discovered other niches in your home that a window leaf should breathe green life into? Then you can save yourself having to buy new plants. By sacrificing a leaf or a stem shoot, you can easily grow a whole flock of young Monstera. This guide will tell you how to do this.
How to propagate a Monstera plant?
To propagate a Monstera, you can cut off a leaf with the stem and aerial root in spring and plant it in coconut fiber substrate, potting soil or peat sand. Alternatively, cut a stem cutting between the vegetation points and place it horizontally in potting soil.
From the leaf to the finished Monstera – A step-by-step guide
An adult window leaf can easily cope if it has to sacrifice one of its impressive leaves as an offshoot for propagation. The best time to cut a head cutting is in spring. If the new growing season is about to begin, rooting will progress even more quickly. Of course, one leaf alone does not make a cutting on the window leaf. This is how you proceed professionally:
- Cut off a leaf including the stem and at least one aerial root
- Let the interface dry in an airy place for 30 to 60 minutes
- Meanwhile, fill a large pot with coconut fiber substrate, pricking soil or peat sand
- Insert the head cutting with aerial roots and water it
At the end, insert a wooden stick into the substrate to the right and left of the shoot and put a plastic bag over it. Until a fresh shoot signals the successful rooting process, the warm, humid microclimate under the hood makes a revitalizing contribution.
Growing a whole flock of Monstera from one stem cutting – This is how it works
A piece of non-woody, leafless shoot axis is referred to as a stem cutting. Instead of leaves, this cutting has several sleeping eyes. These are dormant leaf buds that can be recognized as round points of vegetation. By cutting a stem cutting between these vegetation points, you have suitable material for propagation in your hands. How to proceed correctly:
- Fill a pot for each section with lean potting soil
- Spray the substrate with lime-free water
- Place the stem cutting horizontally on top and press down
- The sleeping eye points upwards
Ideally, place the cultivation pots in a heated indoor greenhouse (€58.00 at Amazon). Alternatively, put a plastic bag or a glass hood over it. In a partially shaded, warm window seat, ventilate the cover daily. To supply water, it is best to water from below. To do this, place the pot in soft water for a few minutes, which will rise due to capillary force.
Roots and leaves develop from the vegetation points. In contrast to head cuttings, this process takes a longer time. Once a stem cutting has completely rooted through its growing pot, repot it into a larger container. From this point on, the propagation phase leads to the normal care program for an adult window leaf.
Tip
A Monstera fruit thrives as a collective fruit made up of countless berries. A single berry contains 1 to 3 seeds that do not have an endosperm. If a seed lacks this nutrient tissue, its use for sowing is just as complicated as with orchids.
