With a growth height of up to one meter and a leaf size of up to forty centimeters, it looks extremely good on a large flower window or in the winter garden. The care of Anthurium Andreanum includes regular watering with lime-free water, a halved liquid fertilizer dosage every two weeks, occasional repotting, no cutting and prevention of diseases and pests in combination with high humidity.
How to water?
Like all flamingo flowers, Anthurium Andreanum does not form an extensive root ball and therefore does not cope well with dryness or waterlogging.
- Whenever the root ball feels dry after the thumb test, water thoroughly.
- Anthuriums do not tolerate lime. Therefore, use rainwater or stale tap water.
- Tip away any excess liquid in the saucer after a few minutes, otherwise there is a risk of root rot.
How to fertilize?
Anthurium Andreanum, like all plants, require a regular supply of nutrients. However, they are quite frugal. Half the dosage of a commercially available liquid fertilizer, administered every two weeks, is completely sufficient.
When will we repot?
Since the root ball of Anthurium Andreanum is not very developed, you usually only need to repot the flamingo flower every two or three years. If you cannot water with lime-free water, you should give the plant fresh substrate every year.
How to cut?
The answer to this question is simple: not at all. You should only cut out yellow or brown leaves with a sharp knife. If the plant becomes too large, please do not cut it back but divide it when repotting.
What diseases are at risk?
The flamingo flower is quite robust and is rarely affected by diseases. Only leaf spot, which causes brown spots with a yellow area and a black edge, occurs occasionally. Commercially available fungicides help well in this case.
Do pests appear?
Spider mites can also cause problems for the anthurium. The tiny little animals are often difficult to detect with the eye. If you mist the anthurium, the webs will become visible. In this case, isolate the plant so that the pests do not spread further and treat the plant with a suitable insecticide.
Tip
As a rainforest plant, Anthurium Andreanum requires an indoor climate with relatively high humidity. Evaporator dishes on the flower window or an indoor fountain create ideal conditions.
