If the anthurium has grown vigorously, it often becomes too large for its original space. Sometimes the old plants also appear sparse because the leaves have grown into very long stems and the plant is bare at the bottom. Then dividing the flamingo flower is a good way to make it smaller and rejuvenate at the same time.

How to divide an anthurium?

To divide a vigorously grown anthurium, carefully remove it from the pot in spring, carefully divide the root ball into two or three parts and place them in new pots with orchid soil or potting soil that has been loosened with Styrofoam balls or expanded clay.

Procedure

Only large and vigorously grown plants should be divided. The ideal time for this measure is spring, when the anthurium needs to be repotted anyway.

  • Carefully lift the plant out of the pot.
  • If this doesn't work, knead or cut open the plastic pots. With clay pots, sometimes the only option is to destroy them.
  • Carefully pull the root ball apart and divide it into two or three pieces with sufficient root mass.
  • If necessary, use a very sharp and clean knife.

Inserting the plants

Anthuriums do not form a sprawling root ball. For this reason, a flower pot that is only slightly larger than the ball is sufficient. Since the flamingo flower is very sensitive to waterlogging, the containers must have a sufficiently large water outlet.

  • Cover the extraction hole with a pottery shard.
  • Fill a drainage layer of expanded clay into the container.
  • Put in the substrate. Orchid soil or commercially available potting soil, which you can loosen up with polystyrene balls or expanded clay, is well suited.
  • Insert anthurium carefully. It should sit just as high as in the old flower pot.
  • Fill the container with substrate.
  • So that the coarse fibers or soil settle down, tap a few times, press carefully and top up with substrate if necessary.
  • Water well.
  • Tilt away any water that collects in the saucer after a few minutes.

Tip

Do you no longer have enough space for all the plants after division? Then simply give away a copy of the evergreen evergreen. Even propagated flamingo flowers are a great souvenir that will bring joy to the recipient for many years.
