There are many different types of yucca, some of which are even hardy, such as the Yucca filamentosa (filament palm lily) or the Yucca gloriosa (candle palm lily). Others, however, such as the indoor yucca (Yucca elephantipes), which is often incorrectly referred to as the yucca palm, come from warm regions and therefore tolerate absolutely no frost.
Can a yucca palm overwinter outside?
Hardy Yucca species such as Yucca filamentosa and Yucca gloriosa can overwinter outdoors, possibly with light winter protection. The indoor yucca (Yucca elephantipes) is not hardy and should be brought indoors when temperatures are around or below zero.
Indoor yucca is not hardy
For this reason, the hardy species can easily remain outdoors during the cold season, if necessary with light winter protection. Yucca elephantipes, on the other hand, cultivated as a houseplant, can tolerate temperatures in the higher single digits, but not around or even below zero. You can therefore place these plants on the balcony or terrace during the warm summer months, but you should bring them into the house in good time.
Tip
The indoor yucca also needs a winter rest period at cool temperatures - around five to ten degrees Celsius - and in a bright location. As a result, the plant will probably even produce flowers.
