In addition to representatives with rather inconspicuous flowers, various Kalanchoe species such as the Flaming Käthchen are cultivated primarily because of their ability to bloom. The extremely easy-care succulents are a pretty splash of color on the windowsill, especially since they produce their flower umbels just when other plants are hibernating.

When does the Kalanchoe bloom?

The main flowering period of the Kalanchoe is from February to July, although from November onwards the plant only needs a maximum of nine hours of daylight to produce flowers. However, a temperature below 18 degrees can delay flowering.

The main flowering period

The short-day plant produces its first flowers in February and, provided only the dead heads have been carefully cleaned out, blooms well into July.

In order for the Kalanchoe to bloom at all, it is important that the plant is not exposed to daylight for more than nine hours from November onwards. If necessary, cover the succulent with a cardboard box that has been cut to size (€14.00 on Amazon), as the artificial light that is switched on in the evening also prevents flower formation.

Tip

If the temperature drops below 18 degrees, the Kalanchoe blooms very slowly. If you keep the plant cold, you can effectively delay the start of flowering.
