How do I create a stream with pond liner?
To line a stream with pond liner, you need a stable, flexible and inexpensive liner. Pay attention to a careful capillary barrier and stabilizing elements. A stone foil covering provides additional protection and a more natural look.
Creating streams
Basically, creating a stream is not much more difficult than building a pond. There are just a few more things to consider when it comes to the stream:
- Streams should definitely be created in the shade or partial shade (to avoid excessive water losses due to evaporation in summer)
- the same bank height and the capillary barrier on the banks (small gravel ditch) must be carried out very carefully here
- the course must be planned precisely
To seal the stream bed, you then have several options:
- a concrete bed
- so-called stream shells
- Pond Liner
Concrete bed
Pouring a concrete bed is time-consuming, but a very good option. You have to dig the trench a little deeper so that you can pour concrete. The main advantage here is the long durability and robustness.
But remember that you won't be able to correct the course later (for example if you want to remodel something in the garden).
Stream shells
These bowls are usually made of either glass fiber reinforced plastic (GRP) or stainless steel (rare). Their advantage is that they are very easy to process and are often offered as complete sets. This means you can create your stream with significantly less effort than with other elements, and you don't have to worry about capillary barriers or sealing measures.
However, the high price has a disadvantage here. “Small” complete sets for a distance of just 1.50 meters often cost around EUR 150, while individual elements in lengths of 50 – 60 cm as additions often cost just as much. The durability is very good, and the elements are also environmentally neutral and organic.
Pond Liner
Pond liner is the most cost-effective and flexible form of stream lining. However, you often have to install additional stabilizing elements to prevent the pond liner from slipping. In this case, you must pay close attention to the capillary barrier. It is best to create a small, gravel-filled ditch to the left and right of the bank that runs parallel to the pond.
As protection, you can use a stone liner (€68.00 on Amazon) to cover the pond liner. This protects the sealing even further and offers a more natural look than laid pond liner.
Tip
If you create a stream with a pond liner, you will certainly have the greatest effort, but the lowest costs. This also gives you more flexibility than other methods if you want to change the course later.
