Raised beds are often more complicated than they seem at first glance. The climate inside in particular should be regulated very precisely. You can read about the importance of pond liners for raised beds and which liners are best suited in our article.
Which pond liner is best suited for raised beds?
EPDM pond liner is best suited for raised beds as it is robust, tear-resistant, temperature-resistant, ecologically harmless and suitable for plants. This film protects the edge of the raised bed from moisture and keeps the necessary moisture for the plants inside.
Climate in raised beds
Raised beds are surrounded by a wide variety of materials - from concrete blocks to natural stone to wooden casings. Each of these materials suffers to varying degrees when it comes into contact with moist soil.
Conversely, the climate in a raised bed should always be slightly moist. If possible, the moisture in the soil should not escape too much so that plants thrive inside the raised bed.
Lining with foil
A film lining primarily protects the casing in raised beds. Despite wood protection, wood that is in constant contact with moist soil will be attacked over time.
There is no wood protector that could really prevent this - with the exception of highly toxic tar products such as Carbolineum, which are now banned. But nobody wants to use something like that in their garden.
Lining the raised bed with foil protects the edge of the bed very effectively from constant moisture and at the same time maintains the moisture the plants need inside.
A suitable film must have the following properties:
- it has to be robust and resilient
- It should be tear-resistant and very tight - in all temperature ranges
- it should definitely be ecologically harmless and suitable for plants
In view of these properties, EPDM film is most likely to be considered. PVC films age relatively quickly and lose the plasticizers they contain. This causes them to become brittle and leak over time.
PVC films are also much less resilient than EPDM films - they quickly lose their flexibility, especially at lower temperatures. And under no circumstances can PVC film be considered ecologically harmless and suitable for plants.
The cost difference between PVC films and EPDM films is usually not significant given the small amount required for a raised bed. PVC films are also offered for this purpose, but EPDM films are clearly the better choice because they are completely environmentally neutral.
