Save costs and build your own greenhouse: Sounds quite tempting. At least if it is possible to obtain the required material cheaply. Nevertheless, the required working time, including the use of construction helpers, cannot be completely neglected in terms of costs.
Is building a greenhouse yourself more cost-effective than a prefabricated house?
Whether building a greenhouse yourself is cheaper than a prefabricated house depends on the materials used, the working time and craftsmanship. The costs vary depending on individual requirements and the quality of the end product.
It definitely has its advantages to build your dream greenhouse from the foundation to the roof all by yourself and therefore particularly individually. Before starting this actually very demanding work, you should seriously think about the extent to whichthe necessary tools are available. Especially when it comes to thermal insulation, work must be done extremely precisely so that even the smallest gaps disappear. But is building a greenhouse yourself actually more cost-effective than a prefabricated house?
The steps until a house is built
The preparatory work is not entirely without andincreases as the size of the planned building increases:
- Look for a sunny, wind-protected location;
- Removing the topsoil from the site and removing roots;
- obtain the desired components and any special tools;
The question of a building permit may need to be clarified and, in addition to the actual building materials, heating and ventilation systems will be necessary, which need to be installed professionally.
This is followed by the assembly of the previously manufactured wall, ceiling and window elements including an effective thermal seal, i.e.:
- Creating a foundation (we have summarized the details for you in a detailed article);
- Assembly of a basic framework made of metal or wood (the latter is extremely vulnerable to the weather!) with secure anchoring;
- Installation of doors and windows;
- Assembly of the roof structure and its drainage (pitched or flat roof);
Because time is ALSO money
For a moderately experienced hobby craftsman, the amount of time required for this alone is financially speakingprobably in the four-digit euro rangeMaybe a helper will be needed for the preparatory work or during the final assembly, perhaps also for the installation of the new greenhouse heating? Therefore, it would be very vague or even completely wrong that building a greenhouse yourself would be more expensive or cheaper than a prefabricated house. Perhaps a self-built house will be better in terms of quality, longevity and the possible uses it offers. At least it should, if appropriate high-quality materials are chosen and the assembly is carried out with careful craftsmanship.
Tip
It seems like a clear stalemate when the pros and cons of self-build and prefabricated houses are weighed against each other. In general, however, it is clear that both options cost money, although the final total depends more on the requirements of the future greenhouse gardener.
