Can I place a golden fruit palm outside?
A golden fruit palm can be placed outside in summer as long as it is protected from direct sun, wind and too much rain and temperatures are consistently above 18 degrees. Regular watering and fertilizing is important before bringing it indoors before winter.
The right location outside
- Bright but not sunny
- warm
- sheltered from the wind
- protected from too much rain
Gold fruit palms are used to warmth and light from their original homeland of Madagascar. Temperatures around 18 degrees are ideal. However, under no circumstances should you place a golden fruit palm directly in the sun in summer. The leaves then burn and the palm tree dies.
Find a place where the Areca palm is protected from direct sunlight by walls, bushes or trees. The location should also not be too windy.
Get the golden fruit palm used to the fresh air slowly by only taking it outside for an hour at a time. If it's too cold at night, it's better to bring them into the house in the evening.
How to care for the golden fruit palm outside
Gold fruit palms need a lot of water compared to other terrace dwellers. You must therefore water an Areca palm regularly so that the root ball never completely dries out. If possible, use rainwater for watering. Low-lime, not too cold tap water is also possible.
The palm tree cannot tolerate waterlogging at all. The best way to care for the golden fruit palm is outside, without placing it on a saucer or in a planter. Rainwater can then drain unhindered through the drainage hole.
Fertilization is carried out at fortnightly intervals with a commercially available palm fertilizer (€6.00 at Amazon). If the golden fruit palm has just been repotted, it must not be fertilized in the first few months.
Bring it into the house in time for winter
You have to bring the Areca palm into the house when the daytime temperatures drop below 15 degrees. Golden fruit palms do not tolerate cold.
Before you bring the palm tree into the house and overwinter it in a bright, sunny, frost-free place, check it for possible pest infestation.
Tip
In winter the indoor air is often too dry for the golden fruit palm. Then the tips of the leaves turn brown. By setting up water bowls and regularly spraying the leaves with low-lime, lukewarm water, you can increase the humidity.
