Blood flowers are quite easy to propagate yourself. Either grow them from seeds or divide the plant. When is it best to divide and what you need to consider when dividing a blood flower.

How to properly divide a blood flower?

To successfully divide a blood flower, select strong bulbs in spring and carefully separate them. Place them in a suitable planter, do not completely cover the bulbs with soil and care for the young plants in a bright and warm location.

Draw new blood flowers by sharing

The blood flower bulb develops small breeding bulbs if cared for well. New blood flowers can be grown from these. However, there are a few things you need to keep in mind when separating the onions.

The best time to share

The blood flower is best divided in spring. The best time is when you have to take the plant out of the planter to repot anyway.

However, you are not allowed to share a blood flower every year. Wait at least three years for the plant to recover.

Don't divide shoots that are too small

The blood flower should not be too small. Only when the plant has reached a pot size of around 40 centimeters will it survive dividing well.

Only bulbs that have already developed quite strong shoots are separated. Small, weak shoots do not produce flowers later.

How to plant the divided bulbs

  • Prepare the planter
  • insert onion
  • do not cover completely with soil
  • pour carefully
  • set up bright and warm
  • how to continue to care for adult blood flowers

The pot for the offshoots should be neither too big nor too small. If the pot diameter is slightly larger, you can also plant several bulbs next to each other. The blood flowers then look particularly decorative.

When planting, be careful not to damage the delicate roots of the blood flower. Do not completely cover the bulbs with soil. The tip should protrude slightly from the top of the substrate.

Place the pots in a very warm and bright location. However, avoid direct sunlight. Temperatures of around 20 degrees are ideal. You should not take young plants outside in the first few months of summer, but rather keep them protected in the flower window.

Tip

Careful! The bulbs of the blood flower contain various alkaloids and are therefore poisonous. Therefore, keep the blood flower bulbs out of the reach of children and pets.
