How do I successfully multiply finger aralia?

To propagate finger aralia, cut 10-15 cm long leaf or shoot cuttings and place them in low-lime water or moist growing substrate. Ensure a bright location and temperatures of 19-24 °C to enable successful rooting.

Cut cuttings

If you would like to grow your own finger aralia, then cut off leaf cuttings or shoot tips. These should be around 10 to 15 centimeters long. It is best to cut a leaf cutting close to the trunk so that the small thickening where the leaf attaches to the trunk remains on the cutting.

Make sure to only use he althy leaves and/or shoot tips as cuttings; he althy plants can only grow from them. The best time for breeding is spring, shortly before your aralia wants to sprout again.

Care for cuttings properly

For rooting, place the freshly cut cuttings in a glass with low-lime water. A light or clear glass seems to be more suitable than dark glass, which lets no or hardly any light through. Now place the Schefflera elegantissima cuttings in a bright and warm place, but not in direct sun.

Alternatively, you can also put the cuttings in propagation granules (€10.00 on Amazon). This should be kept slightly moist throughout the rooting process, but must not be wet, otherwise the young roots could rot. These cuttings also need a consistent temperature of around 19°C to 24°C. Drafts should definitely be avoided during cultivation.

Only provide your cuttings with low-lime water, as they react sensitively to lime and if there is an excess of lime, they may develop roots poorly or not at all. Rainwater is ideal. If rainwater is not available, let tap water sit for a few days. When watering it should be around room temperature.

The most important things in brief:

  • Cut cuttings about 10 to 15 cm long
  • Rooting in a glass with low-lime water or in moist substrate
  • do not use dark glass
  • bright location required
  • ideal growing temperature: between 19 °C and 24 °C
  • plant in humus-rich soil after rooting

Tip

Use low-lime water to water your cuttings, otherwise they may not root. Finger aralia react quite sensitively to too much lime.
