The Calathea or Basket Marante is an ornamental plant that is primarily grown for its very decorative leaves. Not all species produce flowers. But even the flowering varieties only develop flowers if the Calathea's requirements for location and care are met.

When does the Calathea bloom?

Calathea flowering time depends on the species, with some blooming in spring (April – May) and others in late summer. Optimal care conditions such as regular watering, a partially shaded location and temperatures between 20-25°C promote flower formation.

The flowering time of the basket marant is in spring

The color of the flower and flowering time of the Calathea depend on the respective species. Some bloom in the spring months of April and May, while other species bloom earlier in the year or in late summer. If you care for the basket marante for several years, it will only bloom if it is cared for perfectly.

The care has to be right

In order for the Calathea to bloom, care must be optimal. Water the basket martens regularly so that the root ball is neither too moist nor too dry. Avoid waterlogging and use lukewarm, low-lime water for watering.

Place the Calathea in a partially shaded place where it is between 20 and 25 degrees in summer and no colder than 18 degrees in winter. Drafts are harmful!

Flowering types of Calathea

  • Calathea crocata – orange flowers
  • Calathea rufibarba – small yellow flowers
  • Calathea warscewiczii – white flowers
  • Calathea zebrina – white, tubular flowers

Non-flowering species of the basket marante

The Calathea lancifolia is one of the species that is not cared for because of its flowers. It is particularly impressive because of the drawing of its leaves. By the way, the leaves stay particularly beautiful if you rub them from time to time with a damp cloth.

Tip

Simply cut off the faded Calathea inflorescences. Trim the stems as close to the base as possible.
