Szilla is either not found at all or is usually found in large populations. It is recognized when it is in bloom thanks to its characteristic blue-colored starry flowers. But when does the flowering period begin and end?
When is the squill flowering time?
The flowering period of most squill species extends from March to April, with some varieties, such as Szilla peruviana, flowering in winter or the autumn squill from August to October. Ideal conditions for flowering are partial shade and sufficient bee pasture.
Most species bloom from March to April
The majority of the slightly poisonous squill species available commercially bloom from March and into April. Szilla peruviana is an exception that blooms in winter. The autumn squill also does not bloom in spring, but only in August and until October.
Here are more interesting facts about the flower of the squill:
- The plant blooms best in partial shade
- coveted bee pasture
- Recommendation: After flowering, cut off the flower stalks directly at the bottom
- self-sowing after flowering
Tip
If you decide to cut the flower stalks after they have faded, remember not to remove the leaves! The onion feeds on them until summer.
