Frangipani or plumeria can be propagated by sowing as well as by cuttings. Propagation via cuttings is relatively easy and is therefore carried out much more frequently. How to grow frangipani cuttings.
How to propagate frangipani by cuttings?
To propagate frangipani through cuttings, cut woody shoots about 25 cm long in spring. Allow the interfaces to dry and place the cuttings either in a glass of water or potting soil. After successful rooting, transplant the cuttings into pots.
Propagate frangipani through cuttings
Propagating frangipani via cuttings has several advantages. On the one hand, growth is much faster. The plant often flowers in the first year. Plumeria grown from seeds only produces its first flowers after three to five years.
In addition, using cuttings ensures that you receive pure offshoots of your frangipani. When plants are sown, it is a matter of chance as to which colors the frangipani will later bloom in.
Cut cuttings
Cut the cuttings preferably in spring. Then the growth phase begins and rooting takes place more quickly. In addition, there is enough light and warmth in summer so that the young plants can develop well.
The shoots that you cut as cuttings must be woody and about 25 cm long. Incidentally, the mother plant branches at the interfaces and therefore becomes more compact. Use a previously cleaned knife. The cut should be made as straight as possible. This will prevent the cut edges from fraying and giving access to germs.
Before you root the cuttings, allow the interfaces to dry for several days. This will prevent the plant sap from running out later.
Let it root in a water glass or pot
- Place cuttings in glass with water
- Change water every two days
- substitute into potting soil
- set up bright and warm
The water glass should be filled with water about five cm high. Change the water every two days to prevent rot from developing. Place the glass in a location that is as bright and warm as possible. But avoid direct sunlight.
You can also try putting the cuttings straight into prepared growing pots. But you then have to ensure sufficient moisture.
Plant out after rooting
It often only takes two to three weeks for the frangipani cuttings to form roots that are several centimeters long. Now you can repot them into prepared pots.
Tip
Cuttings of yellow and white varieties of frangipani usually root better than those of red plumeria.
