Frangipani, also known as plumeria, is a succulent plant. This genus of plants is easy to propagate yourself if you have some basic knowledge. You can easily grow frangipani from cuttings. Propagation from seeds is time-consuming and not always successful.

How to propagate frangipani?

To propagate frangipani (plumeria), you can cut cuttings from an existing plant and root them in potting soil or water, or buy seeds and sow them in potting soil mixed with sand. Propagation from cuttings is easier and faster.

Propagate frangipani – cuttings or seeds?

Frangipani can be propagated in two ways: either take cuttings from an existing plant or sow seeds.

Growing from cuttings is much easier and much quicker. Offshoots grown from cuttings often bloom in the first year, while Plumeria propagated from seeds only develop flowers in three years at the earliest.

When growing from seeds, it is a coincidence which flower color the frangipani will later have. Cuttings provide the assurance that you are getting an exact copy of the mother plant.

Growing frangipani from cuttings

  • Cut woody shoots as cuttings
  • Let the interface dry for several days
  • place in water glass or
  • put in pots with potting soil
  • set up bright and warm
  • repot after rooting

It is best to cut the cuttings in spring. They should each be 25 centimeters long.

When propagating in a glass of water, the shoots must be approximately five centimeters deep in water. The water should be changed every other day. If you want to put the cuttings in potting soil (€6.00 at Amazon), use a mixture of coconut fiber, perlite and cactus soil as the substrate.

Place the cuttings in a very bright, warm place. They cannot tolerate direct sun. Cuttings rooted in a glass of water are repotted as soon as the roots are two to three centimeters long.

How to sow frangipani

  • Pre-swell seeds
  • sow in prepared potting soil
  • alternatively sow in a germination bag
  • only cover lightly with soil
  • Carefully moisten the substrate
  • Cover plastic film
  • Keep bright and warm until emergence

For propagation in the seed tray, use potting soil or coconut fiber mixed with sand as a substrate. Fill the germination bag with perlite.

It takes two to five weeks for the seeds to emerge.

Tip

If you don't care for your own frangipani, you can order cuttings online or bring them with you from your vacation in the south.
