How do I successfully propagate bonsai cuttings?
To successfully propagate bonsai cuttings, choose 5-10 cm long shoots and cut them at a 45° angle. Plant the cuttings 3 cm deep in substrate with drainage. Keep the substrate moist and wait until the cuttings are strong enough to be repotted.
Advantages of growing from cuttings
Propagation by sowing is estimated to take a year longer than propagation from cuttings. You can also be sure that your young plants have the same genetic characteristics as the first generation. This is an important factor, especially in bonsai cultivation.

Choice of cuttings
The choice of cuttings should not be made solely by eye. So that the shoots form their own roots, they must not be too long. A length of 5 to 10 cm and a thickness of 2 to 5 mm are optimal.
The right time
Basically, spring and summer are considered the ideal time to take cuttings as the plants are now in the growth phase. But even if you decide to propagate later in the year, removal is still possible in late summer. The shoots should then already be slightly woody.
The right cutting technique
For cutting, choose a sharp knife or, better yet, branch scissors. To protect the mother plant from germs, you should definitely disinfect your tools beforehand. Place the scissors at a 45° angle. The slanted interface increases the absorption capacity of water and minerals.
Instructions
Now you have the ideal cutting in your hands, but what happens next? Very easy, with the following instructions:
- Install drainage in your nursery pot. Lava granules or gravel are particularly suitable.
- Sprinkle a layer of bonsai substrate on top.
- Place the cuttings around 3 cm deep into the soil.
- Water the substrate well and keep it permanently moist in the following days.
From cuttings to bonsai
Now you have to be patient. As soon as the cuttings are strong enough, pot them into a larger container. Unfortunately, you have to wait a few years before you can turn the new plants into a bonsai.
