Plumeria reacts extremely sensitively to waterlogging and too many nutrients in the substrate. The soil for frangipanis must therefore have certain properties so that the plant thrives. This is how the soil should be for plumeria.
Which soil is suitable for plumeria?
For Plumeria, permeable soil is crucial to avoid waterlogging. There is special plumeria soil available in stores, alternatively you can make your own mixture of desiccated coconut (50%), cactus soil (20%), perlite (25%), pebbles (5%) and a handful of cat litter (volcanic rock base). Coconut fibers or sandy potting soil are suitable for propagation.
Plumeria does not tolerate waterlogging
The most important criterion for choosing soil for frangipanis is permeability. The roots of the plumeria do not tolerate waterlogging. If the substrate is too moist or there is even standing moisture, the plant will rot and die.
Therefore, always place a drainage layer of pebbles in the pot. If you care for plumeria on the terrace or balcony in summer, avoid saucers and planters so that rainwater can drain away.
Buy plumeria soil in specialist stores
There is now special soil for frangipanis in well-stocked garden shops. Mix in some charcoal. This prevents fungal spores from spreading in the substrate.
Make your own plumeria soil
Experienced gardening enthusiasts put together the soil for plumeria themselves. The following materials are required:
- grated coconut (50 percent)
- Cactus soil (20 percent)
- Perlite (25 percent)
- Pebble (5 percent)
- Cat litter (based on volcanic rock)
Mix a handful of the cat litter into the substrate. This will prevent the soil from becoming too moist.
Substrate for propagating plumeria
If you want to grow plumeria from seeds, use coconut fiber or potting soil mixed with sand.
You can also sow frangipani in a germination bag. The bag is filled with perlite.
Tip
When repotting plumeria, pay attention to the correct pot size. The larger the pot, the better the roots can develop. Clay pots are not suitable as the delicate roots get stuck in them.
