There are different types of Mühlenbeckia that have different winter hardiness. Therefore, they also need different methods for overwintering. The Mühlenbeckia axillaris (black-fruited wire bush) is considered quite frost-hardy down to around -20 °C and is welcome to overwinter outside.
How do I overwinter Mühlenbeckia?
To overwinter Mühlenbeckia successfully, place frost-hardy varieties such as M. axillaris outside and frost-sensitive varieties such as M. complexa in a frost-free room. In both cases, water little and do not fertilize and cut back if necessary.
If you don't know which type of Mühlenbeckia you have, then a frost-free winter quarters is always a good solution. If you have a Mühlenbeckia as a houseplant, it can be kept a little cooler in winter than in the growth phase.
The most important things in brief:
- Mühlenbeckia axillaris can overwinter outside
- Mühlenbeckia complexa needs frost-free winter quarters
- water little (outside only on frost-free days)
- do not fertilize
- maybe shortened before moving to winter quarters (saves space)
Tip
If you don't know exactly which type of Mühlenbeckia you have, then overwinter the plant frost-free or at least give it good winter protection from leaves and brushwood.
