On a balcony, space is usually quite limited. If you still want to grow something, a vertical garden can be the ideal solution. Below you will find beautiful ideas for building a vertical garden on your balcony and terrace.
How to create a vertical garden on the balcony?
A vertical garden on the balcony can be created using plant bags or hanging PVC bottles. Suitable for ornamental plants, vegetables, herbs and strawberries, the plant is ideal for small spaces. In winter, plants need to be cut back and bags or bottles need to be emptied and cleaned.
Vertical garden for the balcony wall: ideas
A vertical garden on the balcony must be tight at the bottom and back and should be able to be hung up. There are several options available here, which you can either get from specialist retailers or make yourself:
Plant Bags
Plant bags are a good solution for the balcony wall. You can get simple plant bags (€195.00 at Amazon) for hanging on the wall with three compartments in a pack of two for just €15.90. The top two levels of the plant bags have drainage so that the water flows into the bottom. If you have open balconies that sometimes get rain, you should put water-resistant plants in the lower area.
Bottles on the wall
This cost-effective upcycling option is only suitable for covered balconies where the vertical garden does not receive rain.
- Collect PVC bottles with lids(!) that are as large as possible.
- Place the bottle horizontally in front of you on the table and fix it.
- Cut multiple openings or a single large opening using a flex.
- Screw the lid on and fill the bottle with soil.
- Edit other bottles in the same way.
- Put plants in the bottles. Mix bushy-growing plants with climbing and trailing ones, whose branches and branches you can direct as desired.
- Attach the bottles horizontally, above and next to each other, to the wall using screws or nails. Alternatively, you can also attach narrow shelves.
- Spread them as close together as possible to give the impression of a green wall.
Herbs and vegetables on the balcony
Instead of ornamental plants, you can also grow vegetables and herbs on your balcony or even strawberries in a vertical garden. You can find out which species are suitable for this and which species can cope with shade in this article.
Overwintering a vertical garden
Bad news: The vertical garden on the balcony must be removed before winter, preferably before the first frost. To do this, cut back all plants and remove the soil from the bags or bottles. Clean bags or bottles thoroughly and store them in a frost-free, dry place.
