Flowers transform the balcony box into a festival of colors and shapes if the plant selection takes into account the lighting conditions at the location. This selection introduces you to lavish permanent bloomers for sunny to semi-shaded and shady locations.
Which flowers could I plant for the balcony box?
Petunias, blue lobelias, Godetia and low girl's eye are suitable for sunny to partially shaded balcony boxes. Mountain cranesbill, downy elfin flowers and nasturtiums thrive in the shade. Drainage in the box prevents waterlogging and promotes the splendor of flowers.
Tireless floral splendor for the sunny to partially shaded balcony
A place on the south side of the house is just right for the following flowers, because they are among the sun-loving permanent bloomers:
- Petunias (Petunia), flower-rich classics with countless funnel flowers from May to October; 20 cm or hanging
- Blue lobelias (Lobelia erinus) for a never-ending flowering period from May to autumn; 15-20cm
- Godetia (Godetia amoena) with its red, pink and white flowers are reminiscent of azaleas from June to September; 20cm
- Low girl's eye (Coreopsis lanceolata) enchants with golden yellow flowers from July to October; 20cm
Combine these classics with the annual newcomer Cisanthe (Cisanthe grandiflora 'Brightness'). With their rainproof flowers, which are up to 5 cm large, they attract everyone's attention from June to September. If there is a white carpet of sweet-scented rockwort (Lobularia maritima var. benthamii) at the feet of the small flower beauties, the picturesque appearance is accompanied by a seductive scent.
Splash of color for shady locations - these flowers bloom in low light
A little lack of light won't stop the following flowers from accompanying you through the summer with decorative flowers in your flower box:
- Mountain Forest Cranesbill (Geranium nodosum 'Silverwood') blooms from July to November; 25-30cm
- Downy elf flower (Epimedium pubigerum), the delicate low-light specialist in spring; 20cm
- Nasturtium (Tropaeolum majus) colorful flowers above decorative leaves from June to October; 20-40cm
Are you looking for hardy plants with lots of white flowers in the shady flower box? Then you can't get past purple bells. By far the largest flowers are the white purple bells (Heuchera sanguinea 'White Cloud'), which also appear on the north side from June to September.
Tip
The splendor of flowers in the flower box is quickly over when the substrate becomes waterlogged after every rain shower. You can easily avoid this problem if you drill holes in the ground and create a drainage system using pottery shards over them.
