A sober balcony railing is transformed into a lushly blooming eye-catcher when a flower box is attached to it. Since the combination of container, soil and plants creates a considerable weight, the holder must be constructed in an appropriately stable manner. These instructions explain how to build a metal balcony box holder yourself.
How do I build a metal balcony box holder myself?
To build a metal balcony box holder yourself, you need two U-shaped steel sheets per box. The brackets are attached to the balcony railing and provide a stable base for an abundance of flowers.
Material procurement and processing
Precisely measure the thickness of your balcony border in advance. To obtain the right material, go to a hardware store or a locksmith shop you trust. There you can purchase 2 steel sheets for each flower box with the following dimensions:
Steel sheets: 100 cm long, 3 cm wide and 0.5 cm thick
In the metal shop, you have each sheet of steel bent into a U-shape. It is important to note that the short side should be around 20 cm long. The long sides of the steel sheets allow you to form another 'U', with the bottom width being adjusted to the width of the flower box that will be placed here later.
The remaining steel sheets are formed according to this scheme until you have 2 brackets available for each flower box. If it is a balcony box with a length of 100 cm or more, we recommend a third bracket for the middle.
Attach the bracket – this is how it works
You can now hang the finished brackets on the balcony railing at home. Place the shaped sheets so that they fix a balcony box, indented by a few centimeters on the right and left. Please note that these brackets only prevent a flower box from falling from the railing to the ground. Therefore, do not place an empty plastic box in the holders, as strong winds could literally unhinge it.
Tip
If you build a wooden flower box yourself, think about the right holder during construction. Screw on curved brackets to the right and left as well as in the middle of the balcony box, which will help you hang the container securely on the railing.
