A raised bed - whether built yourself or with the help of a prefabricated kit - beautifies any garden. Especially if you use such a bed as a privacy screen for the terrace or to divide a large garden into different areas. However, it's not just the raised bed that beautifies the garden, the bed itself can also be spruced up using simple means. There are various options for this.
How can you creatively beautify a raised bed?
To beautify a raised bed, you can cover it with wood, stones or perennials, paint it, glue it or apply mosaic stones. Make sure you choose weatherproof and non-toxic materials and colors to protect the environment.
Disguise the raised bed
A very simple trick to make an unsightly concrete raised bed disappear, for example, is to cover the border of the bed with a different, nicer material. In this case, wood is often used, but you don't have to worry about it rotting prematurely - the stone surround provides effective protection against moisture, so all you have to do is protect the cladding from rain and external weather influences. Non-toxic weather protection glazes are suitable for this (€19.00 on Amazon). But it's not just wooden slats and planks that cover a raised bed, other materials are also suitable for hiding. These include:
- beautiful stones that you can use to build a wall in front of the actual bed
- Perennials, shrubs or trees that you plant in front of the raised bed and thus frame it
- textile materials with which the raised bed can be covered - for example fleece
- Wrapping the bed box with flexible, braided willow branches
- disguising the raised bed with hazelnut branches
If you decide to transplant the raised bed, think of a narrow path between the bed and the planting - otherwise you will no longer be able to access the raised bed for care and, if necessary, harvesting.
Decorate raised bed
In addition to simply hiding or disguising the raised bed, there are other ways to beautify it. You can use color or decorate the bed box with a beautiful mosaic pattern.
Painting raised beds
Raised beds made of wood or stone are particularly suitable for painting or painting. Depending on your mood, you can either paint the entire raised bed in color or simply add colorful ornaments. However, you should make sure to use paint that is as waterproof and non-toxic as possible - otherwise it will quickly end up in the bed or garden soil. Colors such as those used for painting and varnishing children's toys are very suitable.
Paste the raised bed
Stone raised beds in particular can be creatively embellished by laying pretty patterns out of small mosaic stones and sticking them on with tile adhesive. You can get matching stones in many colors, shapes and sizes at any hardware store. Commercially available tiles can also be used very well for this purpose.
Tip
Recessed seating also contributes to the beautification of the raised bed. This can be bricked into the side wall of raised stone beds or attached to the edge (of wooden and stone raised beds).
