Every lawn borders other beds, walkways or walls. Without boundaries, the grass plants overgrow paths and beds. To prevent sprawl, it is best to lay a lawn mowing edge. At the same time, it makes lawn care easier.
How do you lay a lawn mowing edge correctly?
To lay a lawn mowing edge you will need lawn edging stones, a spade, a paving hammer, a spirit level and a folding rule. Use the spade to dig up soil and, if necessary, lay a sand foundation. Place the stones at least 10 cm deep in the soil, align them with a spirit level and tap them into place. Fill the sides with soil and pack them well.
Setting the lawn mowing edge – what you need for it
- Lawn edge stones
- Spade
- Paving hammer
- Spirit level
- Inch rule
- Maybe a string
Select lawn stones for the mowing edge
Garden retailers have a large selection of lawn stones. It ranges from large natural stones to flatter paving stones to plastic films and aluminum profiles.
Lawn edging stones only keep the lawn roots in check if they reach at least ten centimeters, or better yet 15 centimeters, deep into the ground after the work has been completed.
You have to calculate how many stones you need. To do this, mark the lawn mowing edge and measure with the ruler. Divide the result by the width of the stones. For curves you need around ten percent more lawn edging stones.
Straight or curved edges
For straight edges, use a cord to ensure that the lawn mowing edge is actually straight. You have to design curves by hand. A cardboard template can be helpful here.
Set lawn mowing edge
Use the spade to dig up enough earth so that you can lay a small foundation of sand if necessary, and the stones protrude a maximum of one to two centimeters above the ground surface.
This height difference is not noticeable when mowing. You can later simply cut the lawn edging stones with the lawnmower. Use the spirit level to check whether the mowing edge is correctly aligned.
If you want to have peace and quiet from lawns in beds or on paths for a long time, you should lay two rows of stones offset so that the grass roots cannot squeeze through the gaps.
Place stones as close as possible
Now place the stones as close together as possible and tap them into place with the paving hammer.
Fill the sides with soil and press it down well so that the lawn mowing edge does not shift or the stones tip over.
Tips & Tricks
A lawn mowing edge also helps with lawn care in front of a wall. If you create a slightly wider edge here, you can easily shorten the lawn with the lawnmower.
