If the lawnmower jerks and jerks, there can be no question of evenly cut grass. If the engine still emits smoke, you should find out the problem and fix it. This guide gives tips on what to do if a petrol mower runs unevenly and smokes.
Why does my lawn mower run unevenly and smoke?
If your lawn mower runs unevenly and smokes, a dirty carburetor may be the cause. Thoroughly clean the carburetor, replace the gaskets, and then readjust to resolve the problem.
Dirty carburettor causes lawnmower to go out of sync
The most common cause of engine problems on lawn mowers is a dirty carburettor. Given the constant exposure to grass, soil, twigs and leaves, it is hardly surprising if deposits form here. If a gas mower sputters and smokes, put the carburetor through a cleaning program. This is how you proceed professionally:
- Close the fuel line or empty the fuel tank
- Remove the carburetor according to the manufacturer's instructions
- Remove all seals and replace them with new ones from specialist retailers (€58.00 on Amazon)
- Fill a sufficiently large container with mineral spirits and place the carburettor in it
- Meanwhile, blow out each nozzle with compressed air or clean with a fine wire
- Clean the air filter and spark plug too
Finally, take the carburettor out of the petrol and rub it dry with a rag. Again, use the operating instructions to help you install the carburettor. Installing the carburettor is easier if you document each step with a photo during removal. This is particularly helpful if the manual is difficult to understand or is not available.
Readjusting the carburettor - How to do it right
After cleaning, the carburettor is readjusted. After installing the freshly cleaned carburetor, start the lawn mower. How to regulate the motor:
- Tighten the adjusting screw and spring on the carburettor a little bit
- Engine speed increases
- Adjust the second fuel quantity adjustment screw until the engine runs smoothly
In the last step, unscrew the adjusting screw with spring a little to reverse the short-term increase in engine speed.
Tip
If a lawn mower sputters and smokes immediately after maintenance, the device has most likely been tilted incorrectly. To access the blade bar, always tilt your lawn mower with the spark plug pointing upwards. Otherwise, the air filter, spark plug and cylinder head will be flooded with engine oil, causing the engine to run unevenly and emit smoke.
