From root to tip, hornwort can reach a man's height, both outside in the pond and in the aquarium. The final height and rapid growth are planned in advance when planting. But what to do if growth unexpectedly stalls?
Why isn't my hornwort growing?
If hornwort does not grow, it may be due to insufficient light, low water temperature, lack of nutrients or incorrect water hardness. Adjust conditions to promote growth and the herb should recover.
Find out possible reasons
If the fast-growing hornwort doesn't really want to grow anymore and yellow or brown leaves are already showing, there has been a change in its area of life that it doesn't like.
Its owner may not be aware of this, otherwise he wouldn't have let it get this far. That's why it's now important to start looking for possible causes. Check which living conditions are no longer right.
Ideal growing conditions
Remember which conditions hornwort prefers:
- soft aquarium or pond water
- lots of nutrients
- Water temperature above 16 degrees Celsius
- abundant light
Determine current values
Determine the current water values and compare them with the optimum. Check whether the cornea is receiving enough light. How often and with what do you fertilize? Such a vigorously growing plant needs plenty of nutrients. It is possible that these have largely been used up.
Tip
If other plants share the water with the hornwort, they represent direct competition for nutrients. Perhaps the fertilizer doses are not enough to satisfy all requirements. In this case the dosage must be adjusted.
Make changes
Make changes in the areas where you suspect the cause. More frequent water changes, a different or additional lamp (€47.00 on Amazon) and the addition of fertilizer could improve the situation.
Effects become apparent quickly
The hornwort reacts quickly to changes. If you have hit the mark in finding the cause and bring about the solution, the callus will resume growth.
Probably no more than a week will pass between the improvement in his living conditions and the first new shoots. Then the hornwort can do a good job against algae or waterweed as intended, or simply enjoy its existence.
