What is the difference between plum and damson?
The main difference between plums and plums is their size, shape, color and consistency: Plums are smaller, elongated-oval, dark blue to purple and have firmer, reddish flesh, while plums are round, in different colors and with juicy, greenish-yellow flesh.
Common Ancestry
Plums are a subspecies of plums. Botanists suspect a common descent from the wild cherry plum (Prunus cerasifera) and the blackthorn (Prunus spinosa).

The delicious fruits are processed in numerous culinary variations. Plums contain less water than plums. They are better suited for fresh fruit cakes, plum dumplings or fruity desserts.
Plums cook down more quickly when heated due to their soft consistency. They are suitable for making liqueur, compote, groats or jam.
Both fruits can be preserved for many months by drying. They round off the Christmas roast or New Year's dinner wonderfully in terms of taste. In addition, they stimulate digestion and provide valuable energy during the cold winter months.
Things worth knowing for hobby gardeners
In percentage terms, German markets sell more plums than real plums. Other subspecies of Prunus domestica (plums) are mirabelle plums and renecludes. In southern Germany both terms are used differently. A clear differentiation is often not possible.
Since both types of fruit differ primarily in appearance and consistency, a plum can be created from crossing two types of plums.
Harvest
Plums and plums bloom early. Due to their robust character, they delight in abundant harvests in local allotment gardens. Early plums are ripe from mid-July. After the first frost, sweet plums provide a wonderful basis for homemade puree.
