A spring basket brings flowers into the house before spring begins. But which spring flowers are suitable for planting? Below you will find instructions as well as tips and tricks on how to plant a spring basket yourself.
How do I plant a spring basket?
To plant a spring basket, you need a basket, waterproof film, gravel, soil, a small shovel, plants (e.g. B. Daffodils, tulips, hyacinths) and moss. Line the basket with foil, fill with gravel and soil, plant the flowers close together and cover any free areas with moss.
The basket does it
The best way to plant your spring basket depends primarily on the material of your basket: wood or wicker must be protected from moisture, plastic or metal baskets can do without protection. Large-mesh metal baskets in particular look particularly beautiful when they are lined with moss, creating a naturally green basket, so to speak. However, you should have this basket outside where the water can drain away or place a large plate under it.
What do you need for your spring basket?
Every hobby gardener has the tools and materials you need to plant a spring basket at home:
- A basket
- Gravel or pieces of clay
- Some Earth
- A small shovel
- A plastic bag, garbage bag or cling film if the basket is made of wood or wicker
- Plants
- Moss
Which plants go into the spring basket?
When choosing plants, you should consider whether you want a predominant color or whether you want the basket to be as colorful as possible. Beautiful spring bloomers are:
- Daffodils
- Tulips
- Hyacinths
- Grape Hyacinths
- Primroses
- Pansies
Planting the spring basket step by step
1. Lay out the basket
If you want to use a basket made of wicker or wood, you should first line it with a waterproof film, e.g. a robust plastic bag or garbage bag. Let the plastic hang over the edge a little; they can cover you up later.
2. Drainage
If you like to water your plants too much, you should poke a few holes in the plastic film at the bottom so that excess water can drain away. Don't forget to place your spring basket on a plate or coaster! Then add some gravel or broken clay to the plant basket as the bottom layer.
3. Planting
Now add some soil to the plant basket and then place your plants or tubers as desired. You don't need to pay attention to the spacing, just plant densely. But keep in mind that larger plants should grow in the middle and smaller ones on the edge.
4. Finishing the spring basket
Fill the free spaces with soil and cover free areas and visible parts of the film with pieces of moss. Decorate your spring basket as you wish with clay figures or similar.
