How do I plant a wicker basket correctly?

To plant a wicker basket, first line it with tear-resistant foil. Lay a drainage layer of expanded clay, fill the basket with potting soil and insert plants. Cover free spaces with moss or decorative material.

Planting the wicker basket step by step

To plant your wicker basket you will need:

  • a tear-resistant film
  • a wicker basket
  • expanded clay
  • potting soil
  • Plants
  • Moss
  • Decorative material as desired

1. Lining the basket

So that the wicker basket doesn't get wet and fall apart so quickly, you should line it. This is best done with a tear-resistant film. Use this to line the entire bottom of the basket and fold the foil over to just above the edge. It is not necessary that you fix the film, but you can temporarily attach it to the edge with some adhesive strips to make it easier to work with.

2. The drainage

If you have a coaster for your wicker basket, you can cut several holes in the bottom of the foil so that excess water can drain away. However, the basket will become moist from below if it is watered too much. Another option is to water sparingly and create a drainage layer as the bottom layer: To do this, add a layer of expanded clay several centimeters thick to your wicker basket.

3. Fill the wicker basket with soil and plant it

Now fill your wicker basket two-thirds full with high-quality potting soil. Then place your plants in the desired location and fill with soil up to about two centimeters below the edge.

4. Cover open spaces

So that neither bare earth nor the foil can be seen on the edge, place moss in the wicker basket. Alternatively, you can also use pebbles, mulch or something else.

What to plant in the wicker basket?

A wicker basket can be planted seasonally. For example, spring baskets are particularly popular and quite easy to plant yourself. But planted baskets also bring color into the house or onto the balcony or terrace in summer and autumn. The following are suitable for the spring basket:

  • Crocuses
  • Hyacinths
  • Lily of the valley
  • Daffodils
  • Tulips
  • Violets

For the summer wicker basket:

  • Daisies
  • Garden Chrysanthemum
  • Petunia
  • Sage
  • Strawflower
  • Student flower

For the autumn wicker basket:

  • Dahlias
  • Autumn Anemone
  • Autumn Star
  • Autumn Chrysanthemum
  • Heather

Tip

Don't forget the decorations! Small pumpkins, chestnuts, colorful leaves or even Halloween figures can be used for autumn basket decorations, while you can decorate spring baskets for Easter.
