Not every swing frame has such a high weight that no further fastening would be necessary. There are various methods available to effectively prevent the swing frame from tipping over. Choose the one that suits your purposes.
How can I secure a swing?
There are various ways to securely attach a swing: you can hang it on a sturdy tree branch, encase the swing posts in concrete or attach them with ground anchors and sleeves. Make sure that the attachment is stable and tailored to your individual circumstances.
Hang a swing on the tree(s)
The easiest way to “set up” a swing is to hang it from a tree or between two trees. In order for the swing to hang securely from a tree, it must have a stable branch at a suitable height. You can easily hang a rocking board on it.
When attaching a swing between two trees, you need an aid, for example a tension rope (€12.00 on Amazon) or a heavy-duty strap. In addition, the two trees should not be too far apart, otherwise the stability of your construction will suffer.
Set the swing in concrete
The most stable attachment for a swing frame is to set the posts in concrete. If you are renting, ask your landlord first to be on the safe side. Concrete work in the garden is not always permitted without consultation. This work is not complicated, but the ground should definitely be frost-free.
To dig in the right places, it is best to place the assembled swing frame in the desired location. Then mark with flour or fine sand where the posts are and then put the frame back to the side. However, keep in mind that with this type of attachment, the swing frame will be lower than if you place it on the ground and attach it with anchors.
Dig the holes for concreting. A depth of around 50 cm is recommended. The hole should be approximately 15 cm larger than the post diameter. Add a little gravel and then the mixed concrete. Place the frame in the still wet concrete, at least 10 cm deep, but preferably 20 cm. The swing may only be used after the concrete has dried.
Attach the swing frame with ground anchors or sleeves
Determine the location of the swing in the same way as when setting it in concrete and put the swing frame to the side. You can use a chalk line to ensure that all anchors are at the same height. This makes it easier for you to set up the swing horizontally.
Depending on which type of ground anchors or impact sleeves you have chosen, you can set them in concrete or screw them into the ground. You can find information about the individual work steps on the Internet or ask directly when purchasing at the hardware store how you should securely fasten them.
Ways to attach a wooden swing:
- extremely high weight
- Set posts in concrete
- Anchor posts
- fasten with earth sleeves or ground anchors
- hang on tree(s)
Tip
Do not let your children swing until you have properly attached the swing frame. The lighter the frame, the quicker an avoidable accident can happen.
