A shady corner in the garden is often neglected because it is a challenge for many garden owners to make this corner attractive. There are numerous plants that feel much more comfortable in the shade than in the sun.
Which plants are suitable for a bed in the shade?
A shady bed in the garden can be attractively designed with plants such as astilbe, mountain forest cranesbill, elf flower, spring memorial, hosta (heart leaf lily), golden nettle, bleeding heart and forest steinia. Early bloomers such as winter aconites, crocuses and snowdrops add additional colorful accents.
A shade bed doesn't have to look dreary, because some beautifully flowering plants prefer a shady place. With the right selection, you can also enjoy colorful accents in the shade bed from spring to autumn.
What special features does a shade bed have?
Not every shade bed is the same as the next, you should also keep that in mind when planting. For example, if the bed is on the northern wall of the house, it may get a little sun in the morning or evening. Plants that prefer partial shade may also feel comfortable there.
If your shade bed is under one tree or even under several trees, then it's not just the shade that needs to be taken into account, but also the water supply and root competition. A tree with shallow but wide roots makes it difficult for you to plant underneath because its roots may be “in the way”. Conifers also create a soil climate that is unfavorable for other plants.
If, on the other hand, the tree has deep roots and is not very wide, then you can easily create a bed underneath it. However, the plants there only get a little water. If you can't get by with that, you'll have to water a lot. If, on the other hand, you plant perennials that need little water and nutrients, then you have a bed that is very easy to care for.

In addition to numerous (ever-)green ground covers, you will also find flowering plants for your shade bed. These include, for example, the bleeding heart with its delicate red or white flowers or the astilbe that blooms in different colors.
