A stream in your own garden can be easily installed using pond liner or ready-made stream trays. On the other hand, if you have a specific image in mind, you can make your dream come true with natural stone walls. These appear very natural due to their appearance. To ensure that the natural stone stream lasts, you should build a wall around it. Our instructions explain what you should pay particular attention to.

How do you build a stream with natural stones in the garden?

To build a stream in the garden with natural stones, you first have to excavate the course, plan a collecting basin or pond, model the concrete and then insert the stones. You then need to seal the stream, for example with epoxy resin or sealing powder.

Dig and concrete stream

Before you start building your stream, you first need precise planning including a sketch and a calculation of the tools and materials required. The budget is also not insignificant, after all, the materials required for a brick stream are quite expensive. This is especially true for natural stones, of which you will need a lot depending on the length and width of the planned stream. However, the costs can be reduced if you use field stones that you collect yourself or artificial stones (e.g. made of concrete). If the planning is in place, construction will take place as follows:

  • Create a slope if necessary.
  • Dig a pit at the lowest point for the collection container or pond.
  • Mark the planned course of the stream.
  • Dig up the stream.
  • Remove stones and roots.
  • Fill in a layer of sand/gravel, about five to ten centimeters.
  • Stamp these firmly.
  • Model the stream out of concrete.
  • Press the natural stones into the still wet concrete.
  • If necessary, create a raised edge with the stones.
  • Let the structure dry and harden thoroughly.

Seal the stream

Here, however, the work is far from over, because concrete is not naturally waterproof and therefore needs to be sealed. There are various options for this, although for visual reasons you should avoid laying pond liner or applying liquid pond liner. Instead, apply clear sealing materials such as epoxy resin (€6.00 on Amazon) or mix the cement with sealing powder. Then attach the collecting basin and pump and lay the water hose. Atmospheric planting along the stream bank completes the picture.

Tip

If you choose a collecting basin instead of a pond, you should put it in the ground and provide it with an overflow. Overflowing water can be directed from the basin into another ditch or another part of the garden.
