The wisteria is a very attractive plant, especially during its flowering period in spring, but unfortunately it is also very poisonous. Therefore it is not suitable for a family garden. If you have small children, remove the plant.

How do I remove wisteria from my garden?

To remove wisteria from your garden, cut off all above-ground parts of the plant, carefully dig up the roots and dispose of them properly. Wear long clothing and gloves to protect against skin irritation. Next year, check for new growth and remove if necessary.

Even two of the very small seeds can cause severe symptoms of poisoning in children. Since the bean-shaped pods burst open with a loud bang, they are extremely tempting for little ones and poisoning is unfortunately not uncommon. You should avoid this risk if possible.

How can I remove wisteria from my garden?

First remove all above-ground parts of the plant by radically pruning your wisteria and sawing off thicker shoots. You should then carefully dig out the roots. According to reports, wisteria can sprout again even if only small parts of it remain in the ground. Since wisteria is hardy, you should check it the following year and rework it if necessary.

There are various more or less serious tips for killing or destroying the last root parts remaining in the ground. Before you resort to harsh chemicals, try the more harmless methods such as chopping out the roots or covering them opaquely, for example with a dark, holeless flower pot.

What should I pay attention to at work?

The wisteria is very poisonous in all parts of the plant, so you should be as careful when removing it as when doing radical cutting work. The bark contains, among other things, alkaloids that are very irritating to the skin. To prevent dermatitis (skin inflammation), avoid direct contact with the skin. Do not wear shorts and T-shirts when working, but instead wear long clothing and gardening gloves.

The most important things in brief:

  • very poisonous, not suitable for family gardens
  • cutting or sawing above-ground plant parts
  • wear long clothes and gloves
  • Dig up and/or chop roots
  • Dispose of carefully, outside your own garden
  • Check for new shoots next year and remove them if necessary

Tip

If you want to remove wisteria from your garden, then do it very carefully. Otherwise, any root residue left in the ground may sprout again next year.
