The flower is without question the highlight of the laburnum culture. It delights not only with its bright yellow color and its lush grape inflorescences, but also with its captivating scent. But what do you do if the flowers don't bloom?
Why isn't my laburnum blooming?
A laburnum may not bloom due to an extremely unfavorable location, its age (older than 15 years), or damaged roots. Improving the site conditions, for example by improving the soil and providing sufficient light, can promote flowering.
What you should know about the laburnum flower
The laburnum is actually a very grateful garden plant. It hardly requires any special requirements for its light-shading treetop, which is ideal as an arbor roof, and the decorative flower curtain. It is extremely frugal in terms of soil, sunlight and watering - and, above all, blooms well to abundantly, especially under different conditions.
However, he also has a few preferences when it comes to location:
- Soil: Rather clayey, but also sandy, better alkaline than acidic
- Light: As sunny to partially shaded as possible
The Laburnum is not particularly prone to thirst. It usually copes well with longer periods of dryness and heat.
Despite these low or poorly defined requirements, producing the cluster-like hanging, lush and strongly scented butterfly flowers takes a lot of effort for the golden shower. Because it focuses less on height growth and is more or less specialized on flower formation, a lack of flowering is rather unusual.
Possible reasons for lack of flowering
If a laburnum doesn't bloom, there are only a handful of reasons given its willingness to bloom:
Very unfavorable location
If the location is responsible for the lack of flowering, it must be really miserable. This means that the soil could be extremely acidic and impermeable and the shrub could be in complete shade.
Age
It is more likely that the gold shower is simply showing its age. In principle, the Laburnum does not get particularly old. And in its vital phase it expends enormous energy on its annual flowering. You must therefore grant him a pension from the age of around 15 at the latest.
Damaged root ball
The root ball of laburnum is relatively delicate due to its flat spread and fleshy texture. Massive damage could actually lead to no flowering. In any case, avoid rough ground work underneath it. Voles can also be to blame for root damage. Do the wobble test on the trunk. In the worst case scenario, the bush can no longer be saved.
