Often a beautifully landscaped garden behind your home only becomes a true oasis of relaxation in the warm months of the year when there is a certain feeling of privacy. Even if you don't really have a significant budget for it, with creative ideas you can create a decorative privacy screen for little money.
How can I build a cheap privacy screen myself?
Inexpensive privacy screen ideas to build yourself include weaving branches from hazelnut, poplar or willow, using reed mats, building a privacy screen from pallets or planting climbing plants on stretched nets.
Weave a privacy screen out of branches or use reed mats
Basically, a privacy screen with a natural look can be made relatively easily from the cut material of certain plants. For example, the long, straight branches of the following plant species are suitable for weaving a privacy fence:
- Hazelnut
- Poplar
- Willow
In particular, privacy fences made from willow branches are very popular because the branches that are stuck vertically into the ground usually form roots on their own and the privacy fence created from cut material becomes a living privacy fence over time. Privacy protection mats made from reeds or dried willow branches are also available relatively cheaply. However, these must be firmly anchored using appropriate support posts so that they do not fly away in stronger winds.
Absolutely trendy: the privacy screen made of pallets
Recycling is chic and it is therefore absolutely trendy to build your own privacy screen from used pallets. These can often still be used if they already show too many signs of wear for the logistics industry. However, be careful not to use pallets with pollutant residues when building privacy screens with pallets. If a high privacy screen is to be built from more than one row of pallets on top of each other, it is essential to ensure that it is solidly mounted on appropriate support posts. Otherwise, serious accidents can occur due to the considerable weight of the wooden pallets.
Quick and cheap: climbing plants on a stretched net
If you want to cover the garbage cans or compost with a privacy screen, then it should usually be done quickly. In such a case, you can simply stretch a reasonably stable net between two wooden posts or trees and let beans or fast-growing annual climbing plants climb up it.
Tip
A privacy screen made of pallets can also be turned into a “living wall” if small plant containers for herbs or flowers are integrated into the crossbars of the pallets. However, due to the exposed climatic conditions on a wall, they must be watered very regularly, for which an automatic drip system is ideal.
