As the name suggests, the different varieties of floribunda roses are primarily planted directly in an outdoor garden bed. With the right care, floribunda roses can also become true flower stars in pots.
How do you properly care for floribunda roses in a pot?
Bedbed roses in pots require sufficiently large pots (20 liters or more), a sunny location, regular repotting, fertilization, appropriate pruning and special frost protection in winter, such as insulating the pot and protecting the plant crown with spruce brushwood or coconut fiber.
Basic instructions for growing roses in containers
Basically, bed roses in pots should be cared for in a similar way to bed roses planted in the garden bed. However, the following special features should be taken into account when planting flowerbed roses in pots:
- the planter must not be too small
- more attention must be paid to the correct water balance
- Flower roses should be repotted every few years
- Due to the limited root area, fertilization must be carried out regularly
- Flower roses in pots are more sensitive in winter than planted specimens
When cutting, bed roses in pots should be treated in the same way as bed roses in a garden bed: The first cut is carried out approximately at the same time as the forsythia blooms in early spring, a second cut should be made either directly after flowering or in autumn, depending on the variety.
The optimal location for floribunda roses in pots
A certain advantage of growing bed roses in pots is the mobility of the plants. These can be changed seasonally if there are practical or visual reasons for doing so. Basically, the optimal location for roses is relatively sunny, but if there is heat stress in summer, potted bed roses should be moved to a location with good air circulation and occasional shade. Even when grown in containers, roses should generally not be positioned under a canopy, as this can make them more susceptible to diseases and pests.
Overwinter floribunda roses properly in the pot
Flower roses are also usually overwintered outdoors when grown in containers. However, the plants should not be left in the sun during the winter months, otherwise this will cause excessive temperature differences between day and night. To better protect the roots in the pot from frost, the plant pot can be placed in a larger bucket with an insulating layer of leaves or brushwood. Wrapping in jute bags or wrapping with bubble wrap is also possible. The upper part of the plants should be protected from the winter cold with spruce branches or coconut fiber.
Tip
So that the roots of a floribunda rose can develop without restriction, a pot of sufficient size should be chosen. Sizes from around 20 liters upwards have a positive effect on the development of the bed roses in the pot. A conical shape should be preferred over straight pot shapes.
