Roses not only decorate small and large gardens, but can also be cultivated in large containers for many years. However, so that you can enjoy your flowers for a long time, you should - after carefully choosing suitable varieties - care for them in a species-appropriate manner.
How do you properly care for roses in a pot?
Roses in pots thrive best when they are planted in suitable deep-rooted pots (e.g. 70 x 70 cm) with rose substrate and a drainage layer. Bed and dwarf roses are particularly suitable because they are compact and bloom more often. A sunny, wind-protected location is ideal.
Bedding and dwarf roses are ideal
So that you have as much of it as possible on your balcony and terrace, the potted roses in question should bloom more often, not get too big and should be fragrant. Bed and dwarf roses are particularly ideal: they are compact, bloom well and don't grow too tall. You can also choose from shrub and climbing roses, as long as they are not too vigorous. Your choice is mainly limited by the size of the pots. Roses are deep-rooted and therefore need deep containers. A size of 70 x 70 centimeters is optimal for rose pots, although you can use pots made of wood or frost-hard terracotta, but also plastic containers. Only the dwarf roses, which have a shallower root system, can survive in balcony boxes.

The ideal location
In order to grow and thrive he althily, all roses need a suitable location and a favorable microclimate. The most important thing is a warm and sunny location with at least four to five hours of sunshine per day. The optimal place should be protected from strong winds, but the air still has to circulate - locations with accumulated heat promote pest infestation and diseases. A small breeze should blow, but a drafty corner is not suitable. Southeast and southwest locations are particularly suitable for keeping potted roses, whereas pure southern locations (especially if the plant is directly in front of a white wall) can lead to leaf and flower burns.
Planting and repotting roses properly
Plant the roses in the pot in a special rose substrate (€11.00 on Amazon) that is tailored precisely to the needs of the flowers. It is also very important to have a drainage layer made of pottery shards over the drainage holes so that they do not become blocked. Fill the top with pebbles or expanded clay about 10 centimeters high. After three years, the soil should be completely replaced, cutting back both the roots and the shoots.
Tip
Place the pot on feet (for example made of terracotta) so that the water can drain away better and the roses do not get “wet feet”.
